Malvern Hills Foodbank is helping out local families with a pilot scheme over the summer holidays designed to assist a number of children who are, during term time, receiving free school meals.
Chairman Peter Buchanan said ‘We recognise that some families struggle during the summer holidays as their children are not getting a meal at school. Thanks to the generosity of Malvern people we are able to run a pilot scheme to alleviate this.’
The scheme involves selected schools in the area and will continue whilst funds permit. Volunteers are going in to the Spring Lane depot on an extra day a week to offer food parcels prepared specifically for the children containing a mixture of healthy breakfast cereals, jams, cheese, bread, fresh fruit and a treat. The families also receive a one-off package of cleaning materials, toothbrushes and personal hygiene items.
‘We are really pleased to be able to reach out to families in Malvern who need our help,’ said Mr Buchanan, ‘and it is because so many people in the town are extraordinarily generous with both their time and their finances that we can do this.’
